(UPDATED)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In an effort to make its platform safer for teenagers, Instagram today announced new policies to restrict direct messaging between teens and adults they don&#8217;t follow. In other words, adults will no longer be able to send messages to Instagram users who are underage and don\u2019t follow them.<span id=\"more-857656\"><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>STORY HIGHLIGHTS:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Restricting DMs between teens and adults.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>New safety notices about messaging adults.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Encouraging teens to set their account to private.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Protecting teens from unwanted contact from adults<\/h2>\n<p>If the user is under 18 and follows an adult, Instagram will allow DMs between them. Basically, this new feature requires that a teen rather than an adult establishes the connection, giving them more control over their Isntgarm experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor example, when an adult tries to message a teen who doesn&#8217;t follow them, they receive a notification that DM&#8217;ing them isn&#8217;t an option,\u201d according to a blog post on the Instagram website.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\" style=\"margin: 8px auto; text-align: center; clear: both; padding-bottom: 1px;\">\n<p><!-- Ezoic - After Paragraph 2 Mobile\/Desktop Posts\/Pages - mid_content --><\/p>\n<div id=\"ezoic-pub-ad-placeholder-831\"><\/div>\n<p><!-- End Ezoic - After Paragraph 2 Mobile\/Desktop Posts\/Pages - mid_content --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Additionally, Instagram will be introducing new features in the coming weeks to make it more difficult for adults \u201cwho have been exhibiting potentially suspicious behavior\u201d to interact with teens on the platform.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This may include things like restricting these adults from seeing teen accounts in \u2018Suggested Users\u2019, preventing them from discovering teen content in Reels or Explore, and automatically hiding their comments on public posts by teens.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Instagram is also encouraging young people to make their accounts private.
