The new DockCase M.2 SSD enclosure provides up to ten seconds of power loss protection to keep your data safe. It sports a handy status screen and looks great.

DockCase M.2 is an SSD enclosure to keep your data safe

  • The new M.2 SSD enclosure is the sixth Kickstarter project from DockCase. It appeared earlier in 2022 and is about to end the second half of its campaign.
  • This dedicated NVMe/SATA III enclosure houses 2.5-inch hard drives (HDD) and flash storage (SSD) between 7-15mm in height. It accommodates storage devices of various lengths (2230, 2242, 2260 and 2280 SSDs) for a maximum of eight terabytes of total storage capacity (two terabytes per SSD).
  • The accessory works on all modern platforms and devices like iOS, iPadOS, macOS, Android, Windows, Linux, ChromeOS, PlayStation 5, Harmony and others.
  • The M.2 includes several technologies to protect the SSD and it certainly doesn’t hurt that its space gray casing looks business. It’s super sexy and sturdy, rocking a combination of aluminum alloy and tempered glass that looks gorgeous.
  • Best of all, the M.2 is compact enough (127x39x14 mm) to slide into your pocket or purse. Two integrated USB-C ports provide data and an auxiliary 15-watt power source if needed. The included USB-C to USB-C cable has an integrated USB-A adapter so you don’t have to worry about the ports, cables and USB standards.
  • Get your DockCase SSD enclosure for $69 on Kickstarter.

10 seconds of power loss protection

Perhaps most importantly, the M.2 runs for ten seconds after power loss to ensure everything is written to the disk should you lose power.

With integrated capacitors storing an electric charge, the M.2 can sustain power to the SSD long enough for buffered data to be written to flash memory and its mapping tables updated. Read: How to manage volumes on macOS with Disk Utility

Without power loss protections in such situations, you may lose your work as some files may not be entirely saved. It’s also not uncommon that a power failure affects the disk structure and makes it unreadable until erased. You don’t want to put your data at risk of a power failure and the M.2 can help with that.

A small 240×240 LCD screen built into the M.2 gives you glanceable information about the state of your external storage, power loss protection and other features while enabling easy function switching. With D-key control, it’s easy to cycle through the menus, choose multiple functions, check detailed info about the SSD, and so on.

Heat dissipation

The accessory sports a unique dual heat dissipation design to ensure that your storage device operates within normal parameters, ensuring high-speed transfer. This heat dissipation system takes advantage of a graphite thermal pad, which is installed on the heatsink.

Performance and data transfer speed

So how fast is this thing? Well, it’s USB 3.2 Gen 2 fast. DockCase says the M.2 is capable of transferring a one-gigabyte file in a single second.

Needless to say, your mileage may vary as actual experience depends on the type and brand of the HDD/SSD drive. The M.2 uses accelerated transmission protocols (UASP and TRIM) to deliver sequential read and write speeds of up to one gigabyte per second. Unfortunately, Thunderbolt connectivity isn’t offered at this time.

Pricing and availability

There are two models offered, with five seconds of power loss protection and ten. The DockCase includes a resilient silicone cover that provides 360-degree shock protection. Keep in mind that you’ll need to install the HDD/SDD yourself, which isn’t complicated at all (the process involves using a Philips head screw to hold the storage device down).

The DockCase M.2 is currently $69 on Kickstarter.

The early-bird price will increase to $99 when the project officially launches. You may want to hurry up and back the project now as the campaign is already fully funded. First shipments are expected within days of the campaign’s end.
