Apple is reportedly working on a 15-inch MacBook Air, a new 12-inch MacBook, and more
At this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple showed off new hardware in the form of a brand new, redesigned MacBook Air. But, of course, the wheel keeps turning, and product development is a never-ending process. Which means there are new products on the way! Including, apparently, yet another new MacBook Air.
And Apple is going big, based on a report from Bloomberg. Relatively speaking. The publication states that Apple is working on a larger 15-inch MacBook Air, and states that the company may have plans to launch the new laptop as soon as the spring of 2023. So it’s possible that Apple is set to replace its largest MacBook Air to date (with a screen size of 13.6 inches), with an even bigger display around a year later.
Interestingly, Apple reportedly had plans to launch the 15-inch MacBook Air alongside the new 13.6-inch model. But plans change and Apple “shelved” them to focus on the 13.6-inch model for right now.
Now, this is not the first time that we’ve heard Apple is moving in this direction. Way, way back in January of 2021, for instance, it was reported that Apple was considering jumping up to a 15-inch display for the MacBook Air for a future model. And then, again, in March of this year, we heard that development was going on smoothly, and the device could launch in 2023.
So, Bloomberg‘s latest report is certainly not out of left field.
But that’s not all. This report also tells us that Apple is working on a brand new 12-inch MacBook, too. However, unlike the 15-inch MacBook Air, the wait for this laptop might be a bit longer:
Apple has also begun work on a new 12-inch laptop and is considering launching it at the end of 2023 or in early 2024. If Apple moves forward with the release, it would represent the company’s smallest laptop since it discontinued the 12-inch MacBook in 2019.
As mentioned above, Apple axed the 12-inch MacBook from its lineup a few years ago. But, the smaller laptop had its fair share of success in its own right. And if Apple is moving in the direction of a MacBook Air with a 15-inch display (which could lead to the smaller variant being removed from the lineup), adding the 12-inch MacBook back into the lineup (with a better keyboard than the original’s) would definitely be a good move.
Now, before all that, we will probably see some upgrades for the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro models. These won’t have a hardware redesign or anything, but will rather focus on changes under the hood. Specifically, an upgrade to the processor, with Apple adopting the M2 Max:
The M2 Max chip in the next high-end MacBook Pros will include 12 main processing cores and up to 38 graphics cores, up from a maximum of 10 processing cores and 32 graphics cores in the current models.
Right now, Apple’s planning to launch the updated MacBook Pro models with M2 processors before the end of this year. However, things can change, and the report tells us that Apple may push back the release until early 2023 if need be.
So, that’s a look at what’s probably coming down the pipe. All of this, just a few days after Apple officially announced a brand new, redesigned MacBook Air. Which is how it usually goes. So, the question to ask now is: do you get the 13.6-inch MacBook Air, equipped with the M2 processor, MagSafe for charging, and that stunning Midnight color scheme, or do you wait for the 15-inch model that may launch as soon as early next year?
What are you going to do?
