Task Kitchen, Silvia, Everyone Draw, and other apps to check out this weekend
First comes Thursday, then Friday, and then…the Apps of the Week! This week we have some great picks for you, including a powerful task manager with an interesting spin, a multilingual dictation tool, and a drawing up to unite the world. And as always, we’ve selected a cool game for you to check out.
Task Kitchen: Timebox & To-Do
This is one of the more interesting spins on a to-do list app I’ve seen in a while. It’s called Task Kitchen, and its mix of kitchen-related puns and time-boxing productivity features aim to help you stay organized. What is time-boxing, you ask? It’s essentially time-blocking—separating out blocks of time for each task to help keep you focused and productive. 15 minutes to meditate, 30 minutes to catch up on emails, an hour to discover a new element for the periodic table—you know, normal stuff. The app also has advanced calendar integration, support for Google Tasks and Apple Reminders, statistics, and much more. Oh yeah, now we’re cooking.
Silvia
I almost started this blurb off talking about how niche this app is, but given that Spanish and English are two of the most popular languages in the world, perhaps it’s more mainstream than I thought. Silvia is a multilingual dictation extension that allows you to dictate in both Spanish and English at the same time—yes, you can dictate in Spanglish! I’m not an expert by any means, but it’s my understanding that there aren’t many dictation apps that do this, making this for sure worth checking out.
Everyone Draw: Pixel Art Mural
Here is another very clever concept delivered in an app called Everyone Draw. It’s a pixel art drawing/sketch app with a massive twist: the canvas is infinite and live, meaning everyone around the world is contributing to one massive mural. Seriously, how cool is that? You can zoom out and pan as far as you want to in any direction, without limits, and others can watch you draw in real-time. Draw a stick figure or an elaborate skyline—anything you want to contribute to the community. Again, the idea here is awesome, but the app sort of loses me at “come back often to defend your art or risk someone else taking over your territory.” Regardless, I think this is worth checking out this weekend.
Bad Credit? No Problem!
If you’ve been reading this column at all these past 5+ years, you know what happened here. I saw the title and the pixel art and instantly knew I had to mention this game. It’s literally called Bad Credit? No Problem!, and you literally play as a title loan agent that must decide whether or not to lend folks a helping hand. Every decision matters, and you must strike a balance between meeting your boss’s demands and helping those in need. You start out on a 14-day probation, and if you survive that, you unlock the Endless Shift survival mode, where the number of applicants increases daily. Yep, I know what I am doing this weekend.
