iOS 18 brings the Adaptive Lighting feature which automatically adjusts the color temperature throughout the day to Matter-compatible smart lights in the Home app.

Apple has never officially announced this feature, but the latest iOS 18 beta brought out an Adaptive Lighting toggle for Matter smart lights. On August 8, Nanoleaf CEO Gimmy Chu confirmed to The Verge his company is testing Adaptive Lighting on its Essentials line of Matter-compatible lights.

“We are one of the partners that are part of the launch of Adaptive Lighting on Matter products,” he said. “For the past several months, we’ve been doing extensive testing to ensure that the customers will have a great experience.”

The iPhone maker has not listed launch partners for this feature, but no doubt the company is working with other smart device vendors in this space aside from Nanoleaf, one of the biggest names in smart lighting. One of Nanoleaf’s recent products that could benefit from Adaptive Lighting is its new Smart LED Display Cases, designed to showcase your prized collections with fun lights.

How Adaptive Lighting works

Adaptive Lighting arrived alongside the iOS 14, iPadOS 14 and macOS Big Sur operating systems in 2020 as a feature of the Home app on the iPhone, iPad and Mac. Support was limited to some HomeKit-enabled bulbs. Adaptive Lighting runs on a home hub like a HomePod or an Apple TV, continually adjusting the color temperature of smart lights from cool blue to warm yellow throughout the day.

According to Apple’s pitch for the feature, Adaptive Lighting enables the user to “wake up to warm colors, stay alert and focused mid-day with cooler ones and wind down at night by removing blue light.” The feature must be manually turned on by switching the Adaptive Lighting toggle in your smart light’s settings within the Home app. Both ambiance and color bulbs work with Adaptive Lighting.

iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS Sequoia bring other smart home enhancements in the built-in Home app, such as guest access, support for robot vacuum cleaners like iRobot’s Roomba, hands-free unlocking of smart doors and more.
