AirPods Pro repair program for sound issues extended
It has been almost a year since Apple launched the repair program for AirPods Pro with various sound issues, including crackling and static. When the company introduced the program, it said that it would cover AirPods Pro for up to two years after the initial sale. But it looks like Apple has extended the program.
As first reported today by MacRumors, based on reports of AirPods Pro users on Reddit and an updated support document, Apple has extended the program by an additional year. Now, moving forward, Apple will cover AirPods Pro with sound issues for up to three years after the initial retail sale. It’s not a huge increase, but another 12 months is certainly not a bad thing.
As mentioned above, the sound issues for AirPods Pro can be crackling or static, and it covers issues with Active Noise Cancellation.
With this new extension, it means AirPods Pro customers that bought the truly wireless headphones at launch (in 2019), are now covered until 2022. It’s worth noting that Apple repaired the issue so that fresh AirPods Pro units sold starting in October of 2020 don’t have the problem. So, if you own a pair of AirPods Pro that were purchased before that date, but still in 2020, you’ll be covered until 2023.
As noted last year, here are the issues that are covered by Apple’s repair program:
- Crackling or static sounds that increase in loud environments, with exercise or while talking on the phone
- Active Noise Cancellation not working as expected, such as a loss of bass sound, or an increase in background sounds, such as street or airplane noise
If you have any issues, bring them to an Apple retail store (after making an appointment, hopefully), or an Authorized Service Provider. If the repair techs confirm that the issue is covered by Apple’s repair program, they will fix the AirPods Pro free of charge.
Have you run into this issue with your own AirPods Pro?
