Alfonso Cuarón inks multi-year deal to make TV shows for Apple TV+
Alfonso Cuarón has directed a variety of well-received films over the years, and now he’s saddling up with Apple TV+ for a multi-year overall deal.
Cuarón has been behind the camera for such titles as Children of Men, Roma, Gravity, and others. And now, according to a report from Variety, the legendary director has landed a huge, multi-year overall deal with Apple to create TV shows for the fledgling Apple TV+ streaming service. With this type of deal, it means that Apple has first dibs on any TV shows that Cuarón develops over a set period of time.
There is no specific timeframe in the original report, though, so there’s no telling right now how long Cuarón’s deal with Apple will last. Nor does it include any specific mention of what properties Cuarón is working on, or how many TV shows Apple expects to get out of this deal.
Under the deal, the multi-hyphenate will develop television projects exclusively for Apple’s upcoming streaming service, Apple TV Plus. Cuarón’s long-time producing partner, Gabriela Rodriguez, will run day to day operations at his London-based production company, Esperanto Filmoj. He will still maintain his deal with Anonymous Content and will partner with them on certain projects in addition to continuing to work with other collaborators.
Cuarón is not a complete stranger to TV, though. He previously served as a producer for NBC’s Believe, but that only lasted one season on the network.
This is a big deal for Apple, as it means one of the most well-received directors working right now will be building exclusive content for Apple TV+ in the months and years ahead.
Apple TV+ is set to go live on November 1, 2019.
