Apple Watch Studio lets you customize your smartwatch before you buy

Up until this year and the newest version of the Apple Watch, when you bought a new smartwatch from Apple you had to be happy with just a few different band options for a specific case.

If you didn’t like the stock band option? Well you could always pay a bit more to get the band you might really be interested in as a separate purchase. That is changing with the brand new Apple Watch Studio, which the company officially announced yesterday at its “by innovation only” event after unveiling the Apple Watch Series 5.

Apple launched the new customization tool this week, and it’s available both in its physical retail stores and in the online Apple Store. With it, potential Apple Watch buyers have over 1,000 options to choose from between the different cases and bands.

You can see the customization methodology in the screenshot from the online tool above. You start by choosing the size of your case, either the 40mm or 44mm, and then move to choosing the finish: Aluminum, Stainless Steel, Titanium, or Ceramic. From there, you’ll choose the band you want: Sport Band, Sport Loop, Leather, or Stainless Steel. (There are additional band options, such as the Hermés collection, but they are not offered in the Studio tool, it looks like.) You’ll get a front view, and can choose to see a side view as well.

Once you’ve chosen the separate options and put together your desired Watch, there is an “I’m done” option at the top-right of the screen. Select that and your finished model will be presented on the next screen with the option to purchase.

Prices will vary depending on the size and finish of the case, as well as the band choices.

The 40mm option without cellular connectivity starts at $399, and goes up to $499 with the cellular option. If you prefer the 44mm size, that starts at $429 and goes up to $529 for the cellular variant.

Prefer Titanium? You can choose that as part of the Apple Watch Edition lineup. These variants come with cellular connectivity out of the box. The Titanium case is priced at $799 for the 40mm and $849 for the 44mm. Ceramic bumps things up even more, with pricing starting at $1,299 for the 40mm option and going up to $1,349 for the 44mm variant. Like the Titanium option, Ceramic features cellular connectivity out of the box.

So, that’s the Apple Watch Studio in a nutshell. A quick and easy way to customize your Apple Watch before you buy, giving you the case finish and size, along with the band of your choice, before you fork over your money.

All of the customizable options are the Apple Watch Series 5, for what it’s worth.

Are you planning on using the Apple Watch Studio to buy your next Apple Watch?
