How to rotate, straighten, crop, trim or flip a video in the Photos app on iOS 13

The much-improved Photos app in iOS 13 and iPadOS brings many feature enhancements like the ability to edit videos, so you can finally rotate a video without using another app.

Before iOS 13 and iPadOS, you had to use a third-party app rocking a Photos extension, like iMovie or Infltr, to edit a video in the context of the Photos app. iOS 13 and iPadOS let you edit videos on your iPhone or iPad out of the box.

Apple’s software engineering SVP Craig Federighi detailed the new Photos features during the iOS 13 segment of the June 3 keynote talk at the Worldwide Developers Conference 2019.

Nearly everything you can do with a photo you can now do with a video. This includes things like rotating or straightening a video. As a matter of fact, you can apply all of the filters and effects to videos. Like with images, all video edits are nondestructive, making it super simple to undo a trim or a crop operation and revert to the original video.

Photos in iOS 13 and iPadOS let you apply all those effects to your iPhone videos.

Video editing in iPadOS and iOS 13’s Photos app supports all video formats captured on iPhone, including footage shot in 4K at 60 fps and slo-mo clips in 1080p at 240 fps.

While editing a video (or a photo, for that matter), you’ll notice that you can use the pinch gesture to zoom in or out, which is great if you’d like to review your changes on a specific area of the clip. Even better, the video in the editing interface has a progress indicator so that you can quickly jump to any segment of the clip whilst making edits.

Follow along with iDB as we show you how to rotate, straighten, crop, trim or flip a video.

How to rotate videos in iOS 13’s Photos app

To rotate a video on your iPhone or iPad, do the following:

1) Open Photos on your iPhone/iPod touch with iOS 13 or iPad with iPadOS.

2) Tap the Albums tab.

3) Scroll down and choose Videos underneath the heading Media Types.

4) Now choose the video you’d like to rotate.

5) With the video selected, hit Edit in the upper-right corner.

6) Choose the Rotate tool (the second icon near the top-left corner above the video) to rotate the video 90 degrees clockwise. You cannot rotate a video counterclockwise, but that’s OK — simply repeat the process until you get the orientation you want.

Finally, Photos lets us rotate portrait videos to landscape, and vice versa.

7) If you’re happy with your edits, tap Done to save the changes.

You can undo the adjustments at any time by tapping the Reset button.

How to straighten videos in Photos on iOS 13

Follow the steps below to straighten a video on your iPhone or iPad:

1) Open Photos on your iPhone/iPod touch with iOS 13 or iPad with iPadOS.

2) Tap the Albums tab.

3) Scroll down and choose Videos underneath the heading Media Types.

4) Now choose the video you’d like to straighten.

5) With the video selected, hit Edit in the upper-right corner.

6) Choose the Straighten tool, which is the fist icon from left to right located in the horizontal strip of adjustment tools right below the video.

The grid helps you with alignment.

7) Straighten the video by sliding the horizontal dial below the tool left or right, which will rotate it counterclockwise or clockwise, respectively. The effect’s intensity ranging from -45 degrees to +45 degrees is displayed inside the tool’s circular icon. As you move the dial, a grid appears on your photo to help you with alignment.

8) Tap Done to save your edits.

The other two icons below the video are for perspective adjustments.

The Straighten tool makes it simple to correct skewed perspective.

Simply tap the Horizontal or Vertical tool (the second and third icon, respectively, from left to right in the horizontal strip of adjustment tools), then drag the slider left or right, which makes it easy to adjust the video’s skewed perspective.

To cancel your edits, tap the Reset button.

How to crop videos in iOS 13’s Photos app

To crop a video on your iPhone or iPad, do the following:

1) Open Photos on your iPhone/iPod touch with iOS 13 or iPad with iPadOS.

2) Tap the Albums tab.

3) Scroll down and choose Videos underneath the heading Media Types.

4) Choose the video you’d like to crop.

5) With the video selected, hit Edit in the upper-right corner.

6) Choose the Crop tool by tapping the rightmost icon in the horizontal strip of adjustment tools at the bottom of the screen to reveal a grid overlay.

7) To apply quick freeform cropping, simply drag the grid’s corners and let go of the selection rectangle. After a moment or two, your cropped video appears.

8) Tap Done to save your edits.

To cancel your edits, tap the Reset button.

Adjusting the aspect ratio

Photos lets you choose from a range of ratios for cropping, like portrait, square or 5:7.

To access all of the built-in aspect ratios, select the Crop tool and then tap the first icon near the top-right corner of the screen. A horizontally scrollable list of all the aspect ratio presets appears lined up across the bottom of the Photos interface. Now scroll the list left or right with y our finger, then tap a desired value to instantly see the results.

Accessing the built-in crop presets.

The following built-in aspect ratios are included:

  • Original: Revert to the video’s original aspect ratio.
  • Freeform: Apple a custom freeform crop.
  • Square: Crop the video so that it’s square.
  • 16:9
  • 10:8
  • 7:5
  • 4:3
  • 5:3
  • 3:2

Don’t forget to hit that Done button to save your cropped video.

Portrait or landscape?

An image’s aspect ratio indicates the proportional relationship between its width and height. The aspect ratio is usually expressed as two numbers separated by a colon, as in 16:9. Different aspect ratios serve different purposes. Aside from the square orientation, a piece of content like an image or video may have either portrait or landscape dimensions.

When you choose one of the aspect ratios for your video in the Photos app, you can quickly toggle between its portrait or landscape version. Say you cropped your video to the standard 16:9 landscape format used by many television sets and broadcast standards.

Toggling between portrait and landscape ratios.

To quickly apply its portrait variant, just tick the corresponding box below the video. You’ll notice that doing so also reverts all the other aspect ratio presets to their landscape variants: 16:9 becomes 9:16, 4:3 is 3:4, 3:2 is 2:3 and so forth.

Like always, hit the Reset button to clear all the adjustments and revert to the original video.

How to trim videos in iOS 13’s Photos app

Follow the steps below to trim a video on your iPhone or iPad:

1) Open Photos on your iPhone/iPod touch with iOS 13 or iPad with iPadOS.

2) Tap the Albums tab.

3) Scroll down and choose Videos underneath the heading Media Types.

4) Hit the video you’d like to trim.

5) Tap Edit in the upper-right corner.

6) Using the sliders on both sides of the timeline below the video, adjust your start and stop times the way you like by dragging a sliders with your finger. The segment selected for trimming will be tinted yellow on the video timeline.

To preview the video before trimming, simply tap the Play button.

7) If you’re happy with your video, tap Done to save the changes.

Before iOS 13, the Photos app would always save your trimmed video as a new file so that you can use the long or short version whenever you like. iOS 13 changes that behavior. Because all video edits are non-destructible, you can always undo the changes or revert to the original file so there’s no longer need to keep a trimmed clip alongside its original-length counterpart.

If you change your mind and want to go back to the full-length video later, open it and tap Edit, then hit the Reset button to undo all of your changes all at once.

How to flip videos in iOS 13’s Photos app

To flip a video on your iPhone or iPad, do the following:

1) Open Photos on your iPhone/iPod touch with iOS 13 or iPad with iPadOS.

2) Tap the Albums tab.

3) Scroll down and choose Videos underneath the heading Media Types.

4) Now choose the video you’d like to flip.

5) With the video selected, hit Edit in the upper-right corner.

6) Choose the Crop tool

7) Finally, tap the Trim tool, it’s the first icon from the left in the area above the video.

Any video in iOS 13’s Photos app can be flipped horizontally…

Your video will be instantly flipped horizontally (Photos doesn’t support vertical flipping).

…with a tap of the Flip button, no iMovie needed.

8) Tap Done to save the changes.

You can undo the adjustments at any time by tapping the Reset button right below the video.

Everything new in Photos on iOS 13

Here’s Apple’s list of features, improvements and under-the-hood tweaks in Photos on iOS 13:

  • All-new Photos tab: The all-new Photos tab lets you browse your photo library with different levels of curation so it’s easy to find, relive and share your photos and videos. You can view everything in All Photos, focus on your unique photos in Days, relive your significant moments in Months or rediscover your highlights in Years.
  • Auto-playing Live Photos and videos: Throughout the Photos tab, muted Live Photos and videos begin playing as you scroll, bringing your photo library to life.
  • Smart photo previews: In Days, Months and Years, photo previews are larger to help you distinguish between shots. Photos uses intelligence to find the best part of your photo in photo previews, which means you get to see the uncropped version of your photo when you tap to view it.
  • Contextual transitions: Animations and transitions keep your place in the Photos tab so you can switch between views — like Days and All Photos — without losing your place.
  • Removes similar shots and clutter: Duplicate photos, screenshots, whiteboard photos, documents and receipts are identified and hidden so you see only your best shots.
  • Significant events: Months presents your photos by events so you can rediscover the moments that matter most.
  • Event titles: The Photos tab displays the name of the location, holiday or concert performer to provide helpful context for your significant events.
  • On this Day: Years is contextual so it shows you photos taken on or around today’s date in past years.
  • Birthday mode: If you have birthdays assigned to people in your People album, the Photos tab will highlight your photos of them on their birthday.
  • Zoom in and zoom out: View your library in All Photos however you’d like. Zoom in for a closer look or zoom out to quickly scan through your library and see all your shots at once.
  • Screen recordings smart album: All your new screen recordings are now in one place.
  • Search enhancements: You can combine multiple search terms — like “beach” and “selfies” — without tapping each word in search.
  • Music for Memories: Soundtracks for Memory movies are selected based on what you listen to in the Music app.
  • Extended Live Photos playback: When you press and hold to play a Live Photo, Photos will automatically extend the video when you have Live Photos taken within 1.5 seconds of each other.
  • Preview intensity: As you apply an edit, each adjustment displays its intensity so you can see at a glance which effects have been increased or decreased.
  • Individually review each effect: Tap each effect icon to see what your photo looked like before and after the effect was applied.
  • Filter control: Control the intensity of any filter, like Vivid or Noir, to fine-tune your look.
  • Enhance control: Enhance now lets you control the intensity of your automatic adjustments. As you increase or decrease Enhance, you’ll see other adjustments — including Exposure, Brilliance, Highlights, Shadows, Contrast, Brightness, Black Point, Saturation and Vibrance — intelligently change with it.
  • Video editing support: Nearly everything you can do with a photo you can now do with a video. Adjustments, filters and crop support video editing so you can rotate, increase exposure or even apply filters to your videos. Video editing supports all video formats captured on iPhone, including video in 4K at 60 fps and slo-mo in 1080p at 240 fps.
  • Nondestructive video edits: Video edits are now nondestructive so you can remove an effect like a filter or undo a trim to return to your original video.
  • Vibrance: Boost muted colors to make your photo less rich without affecting skin tones and saturated colors.
  • White Balance: Balance the warmth of an image by adjusting temperature (blue to yellow) and tint (green to magenta).
  • Sharpen: Change photos by making edges crisper and better defined.
  • Definition: Increase image clarity by adjusting the definition slider.
  • Noise reduction: Reduce or eliminate noise such as graininess or speckles in photos.
  • Vignette: Add shading to the edges of your photo to highlight a powerful moment using Strength, Radius and Falloff.
  • Updates to auto adjustments: Straighten, crop and adjust the perspective of your photos automatically.
  • Pinch-to-zoom support: You can pinch to zoom while editing to review your changes on a specific area of your photo.
  • Image Capture API: The Image Capture API allows developers to leverage the Camera Connection Kit to import photos directly into their apps.
  • Updates to Portrait Segmentation API: The Portrait Segmentation API now supports skin, hair and teeth segmentation, so developers can create new effects for Portrait mode photos.

All of these features are supported by both iOS 13 and iPadOS unless stated otherwise.
